Eventually annexed into the United States from Mexico in 1850 under California’s statehood, the region witnessed significant farming activity beginning in the mid-1800s, concentrated in the Menifee area. Mining activity commenced in the early 1880s with the discovery of a significant quartz lode by miner Luther Menifee Wilson, from whom the area derived its name.

Early development of the City of Menifee began with Sun City in the early 1960s, envisioned by Del Webb, a major building contractor from Phoenix, Arizona, as an active retirement community. Sun City, centrally located within Menifee, features a mix of residential and commercial activity. Further growth ensued in 1989 with the master-planned community of Menifee Lakes, solidifying Menifee’s status as one of the fastest-growing communities in California. Additionally, Quail Valley and Romoland emerged as semi-rural residential communities in the northwestern and northeastern sections of the city, respectively.

On June 3, 2008, the residents of the communities encompassing the City of Menifee voted to incorporate Menifee into Riverside County’s 26th city. The new City of Menifee was officially established on October 1, 2008. Today, Menifee continues to flourish as a hub of residential, commercial, and recreational activity, offering a unique blend of historic roots and modern amenities to residents and visitors alike.
