History of Sun City
Sun City, California, traces its roots back to the Perris Valley, a region steeped in history since the establishment of the community of Perris in 1885. For decades, this rural grassland valley remained relatively unchanged, with sparse population and limited development.
However, in 1957, the landscape began to transform when Richard Rand, a visionary land developer, acquired the Newport Ranch with aspirations to create a planned community called Ransdale. Despite initial efforts, Rand’s plans stalled, leaving only a modest motel and office in place.
The turning point came in 1959 with the arrival of Del Webb, a pioneering figure in the realm of active retirement communities. Having achieved remarkable success with Sun City in Arizona, Webb sought to replicate his triumph in Southern California, where the sun shone over 200 days a year. Identifying the Perris Valley as an ideal location due to its strategic proximity between San Diego and Los Angeles, Webb embarked on acquiring land for his latest venture.
Webb’s vision took shape as he purchased vast parcels from Rand and other local farmers in the Menifee Valley, ultimately amassing 14,000 acres of prime real estate stretching from Scott Road to Ethanac Road. Remarkably, Webb secured these lands at prices ranging from $500 to $900 per acre, laying the foundation for what would soon become Sun City, California.
From these humble beginnings emerged a dynamic community that transcended mere residential development. Sun City evolved into a haven for active adults seeking a vibrant lifestyle amidst picturesque surroundings and a close-knit community atmosphere. Over the years, the area has continued to flourish, embracing new amenities, recreational opportunities, and diverse housing options, while preserving its rich heritage and commitment to fostering a fulfilling retirement experience for its residents.
